| Course contents : | The first part of the course is devoted to the theorie of functions of one and several variables. We will study properties of limits, continuity, and differentiation. To establish the theory, the course will also present some more general tools like metric spaces. The second part consists of an introduction to the theory of integration which is suitable for the needs of applications. |
| Course objective : | Functions of several variables are used in all of mathematics and in almost all applications. Therefore not only the results but also the methods presented in the course are basic for large parts of mathematics. |
| Prerequisites : | No special prior knowledge is required except a certain maturity in logical reasonning. |
| Workshops : | The exercises and repetitions are directed by the scientific assistants. They will discuss and explain the theory devellopped in the course. Moreover, solutions to exercises will be presented by students as well as the assistants. |
| Organization : | The timetable will be available at the beginning of the academic year. |
| Written notes : | Lecture notes (which cannot replace to attend the course) will be available at the beginning of the academic year.
In addition, we strongly recommend Walter Rudin's "Principles of Mathematical Analysis" |
| Assessment : | During the year there will be some tests whose results count for the final mark only if they are favourable for the student. A written examination about the theory as well as some exercises will be in january, 2007. The final examination are partly written (theory and exercises) and partly oral (comprehension of the theory and its applications). |
