Course contents :  Syntax is more abstract (less in direct relation with nonlinguistic reality) than phonology and morphology on the one hand, semantics on the other. However, most contemporary linguists agree on the central role of syntax in language. What is that role? How can syntactic phenomena be shown to exist (tests)? How can we describe them (representations, rules, syntactic theories)? What is universal in syntax? Why? What types of syntactic phenomena can differ in the world's languages. Such problems will be dealt with in the course.
