Course contents :  The lecture will inscribe the history of book in the Walloon country, from Renaissance to Romanticism), in the general history of the French book, on the basis of works by R. Chartier, R. Darnton, Fr. Barbier, etc. It will teach the methods and documentary resources allowing ro identifie the Liège participation to counterfeiting and clandestine production of literature during the XVIIIth century. Examples will be provided concerning Voltaire, Rousseau, Diderot, Montesquieu, Marmontel, Beaumarchais, La Mettrie, Raynal, etc. For 2007-2008, the lecture, including an active participation of students, will stress the Liège contribution to the reproduction of materialist or atheist literature, on one side, an to erotic or pornographic literature on the other side (Académie des dames, Margot la ravaudeuse, Le compère Mathieu and L'arretin moderne by Dulaurens).
Course objective :  Give to the student the methodological and documentary means to start a study in the history of book. Afford various trails for the identification of Liège counterfeitings. Provide the information concerning the current studies on quantitative analysis of private libraries or book collections.
Prerequisites :  A basis knowledge of French literature of early modern times and the cultural history of Liège prince-bishopdom.
Workshops :  Personal research on the edition of an author or a literary work; describing a private library on the basis of a document provided by the archives.
