GEOL0236-1  Remote sensing and geo-imaging
Duration :  15h Th, 15h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
civil engineering in geology, 3rd year2,5
civil engineering in geology (Programme for "licenciés" in geological and mineralogical sciences), 2nd year3
Holder(s) :  Eric Pirard, Philippe Trefois
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  This course is split in two parts.

The first one focusses on principles of images acquisition and image processing

The second one deals more specifically with application in quantitative mineralogical image analysis and geological remote sensing
Course objective :
  • To give the students a complete overview of the possibilities to quantify information within images
  • To present the basis of image acquisition and filtering with a particular emphasis on mathematical morphology
  • To offer students the possibility to pratice imaging tools and applications in mineral sciences
  • To give each a a basic knowledge to adequately choose the hardware and software needed to address a given problem
Prerequisites :  None
Workshops :  TP1 : Overview of commercial equipment. Practice of image acquisition with cameras and scanners.
Worked examples in ore microscopy, ornamental stones imaging, field imaging,...
TP2 : Practice of image processing operations. Comparative evaluation of image segmentation techniques Worked examples in colour optical microscopy, EDX imaging, sands and powders,...
TP3 : Practice of image analysis operations. Practical estimation of volumic fractions within several materials. Worked examples from optical or electronic imaging in ores and sediments

TP4 : Demonstration of geological applications in remote sensing
Organization :  Theoretical modules of 2 hours

Practice using professional software for image analysis
