Course contents :  THe course is organised in 8 sections

Course objective :  The aims are:

  • to explain rthe paleoclimate approach. What are the available geological tools or archive? What are the most appropriate dating methods? How accurate are the proposed climate reconstructions?
  • To illustrate the natural climate variability over different timescales, since the Earth's formation until the recent climate changes
  • to identify the driving factors of climate changes. The influence of human activities will be also discussed through IPCC (Intergovernment Panel for Cimate Change) predictions for the next century climate.
Prerequisites :  None. The course will be adapted taking into account the basic formation and/or knowlegdes of the audience
Workshops :  Visits of specific laboratories working on paleoclimate archives at ULg and/or in others universities
Organization :  
  • Theory: 5 lectures of 3h.
  • Practise: Visits of specific laboratories working on paleoclimate archives at ULg and/or in others universities
Written notes :  Copy of figures and tables presented and discussed during lectures available.

Assessment :  Personal work. Selection of a scientific paper. Oral presentation and short written report.
