Course contents :  I. Part A: Environmental impacts and Methodology of the ` Life Cycles Assessment' (LCA) by A.GERMAIN

- inventory of the environmental impacts of the human (industrial and domestic) activities (mainly atmospheric impacts);

- life of a product (production starting from the raw materials, use, elimination or recycling after use);

- LCA methodology



II. Part B: Environmental integration of large Civil Works by M. PIROTTON & B. DEWALS (Goal: analysis of the integration of constructions - hydraulic structures and constructions - within the sustainable development concept).

1. Definition of the environment in Civil Engineering problems.

2. Proposal of durability and acceptability criteria.

3. Method of analysis and choice.

4. Measurements of mitigation

5. Application on cases:

· Viaduct of Millau - France.

· Dam on the Eau d'Heure Belgium.

· Belgium - Robertville dam.

· Dam of the three gorges in China

· Protection against flooding in Esneux - Belgium

· etc



III. Part C: Geo-risks and geo-resources by A. DASSARGUES

- environmental impact of geo-resources exploitation;

- concepts of reserves of the geo-resources and sustainable development;

- natural and induced geo-risks: natural an man induced problems in connection with possible consequences. Examples: waste disposal, groundwater pumping, accidents, urbanization, industrial and metallurgical activities, agricultural activities... in relation with soil and groundwater contamination, collapse, slope stability problems, subsidence, overexploitation...
