| Course contents : | Genetic aspects of evolution (5h, C. Remacle)
- Genetic factors of evolution (mutation, migration, selection, genetic drift)
- Mechanisms contributing to speciation (species definition, pre- and postzygotic barriers; types of speciation (sympatric, allopatric), from speciation to macroevolution)
Molecular aspects of evolution (10h, V. Demoulin)
- Evolution of macromolecules: functional role of aminoacids or nucleotides or neutral mutations (introduction) (2h)
- Use of aminoacid or nucleotide sequences to reconstruct evolution-Intrinsic interest and use in functional studies (7)
- Evolution of secundary metabolism (1h)
Functional adaption at the biochemical level (5h, M. Galleni)
- Adaptation of proteins to various environmental factors (t°, pH...) |

| Course objective : | Make students conscious of the importance of evolution. A part of the course deals with the genetic mechanisms of evolution and another shows the diversification of macromolecules as well as the pathways of secundary metabolism. Methods of reconstruction of the evolution of macromolecules and their fundamental interest are presented as to arouse the critical spirit of students.
Concrete situations of functional adaptations of proteins are presented. |

| Prerequisites : | Elements of biology, genetics and biochemistry of the Bac level. |

| Organization : | First quadrimester course taking usually place in one of the lecture rooms of the Botanical Institute in Sart Tilman (B.22). The sequence of the course is that of the general presentation. |
