ELEC0047-1  Electric Power Systems (Dynamic Aspects)
Duration :  30h Th, 30h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
civil engineering in electricity, 3rd year6,5
Holder(s) :  Thierry Van Cutsem
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  1st part : Modelling of components and controls
  • dynamics of the synchronous machine: time constants, inductances, state equations, per unit systems, rotor motion
  • power system modelling under the quasi-sinuosidal approximation
  • induction machine: modelling and behaviour after a disturbance
  • turbines and speed governors: thermal power plants, hydro power plants
  • excitation systems and automatic voltage controllers
  • static var compensators
  • series compensation : fixed and variable (FACTS devices).
2nd part. Stability
  • stability notions in electric power systems : definitions, links with notions from system theory
  • small-signal angle stability : analysis of the one-machine infinite-bus system, then of large systems, modal analysis. Stability improvement : design of controllers aimed at damping oscillations, in particular the power system stabiliser
  • transient (angle) stability : analysis (equal area criterion) and improvement
  • frequency stability
  • voltage stability : analysis of short- and long-term voltage collapse scenarios, stability improvement. Demonstration of the ASTRE software.
Course objective :  Graduate course dealing with Power System Dynamics : modelling, control and stability.
Prerequisites :  ELEC029 or an equivalent course.
Workshops :  Examples from a SIMULINK (MATLAB) model library are given during the lectures. A personal assignment is requested, using that tool.
Organization :  Course taught at the first and/or second term, according to the audience.
Written notes :  Detailed lecture notes available on paper and in electronic (PDF) format.
Assessment :  A personal assignment is given to the student, which deals with various parts of the course and requires to use the SIMULINK power system library. A written report is requested with possibly an oral presentation.
