CHIM0237-1  Analytical chemistry in nonaqueous solvents
Duration :  15h Th
Credits/ECTS :
"licencié" chemical sciences, 2nd year2
Holder(s) :  Bernard Gilbert
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  First part: General considerations on non-aqueous solvents:

The solvent and the aqueous solution
- types of solvents
- the process of solvation
- in molecular media dissociating and not dissociating
- in ionic media

Thermodynamic aspects of solvation
- definition of the standard state
- measurement of a coefficient of activity in non-aqueous media - correlation of the analytical properties while passing from one solvent to the other: - transfer properties

Second part: Analytical aspects: Acid-base concepts with protons exchange
- in dissociating media
- in non dissociating media
- in ionic media.

Variation of a property following the transfer of a S1 solvent towards anotherS2 solvent. Ions Exchange with participation of the solvent. Oxydoreduction in non-aqueous media
Course objective :  The goal of the course is not to give details on the applications of non-aqueous solvents but to present the fundamental concepts which allow to evaluate a solvent for an given analytical reaction, on the basis of qualitative and quantitative considerations. The emphasis is on the general conclusions of these concepts and especially, on their limitations.
Prerequisites :  Good knowledge of the basic concepts of electrochemistry and thermodynamics presented in previous years
Organization :  Theoretical course, on the 1st or 2d semester

Duration: 15 hours
Written notes :  Course notes and transparencies were written, in English, and are available
Assessment :  The evaluation includes: a general examination in May-June (one hour of written preparation followed by an oral defense)
