BOTA0216-1  Systematics of vascular plants
Duration :  10h Th, 30h Pr, 8h FW
Credits/ECTS :
"licencié" biological sciences (biology of plants), 2nd year4
Holder(s) :  Emmanuel Sérusiaux
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  This course is discontinued.

The course starts with a full day dedicated to lichenology, including examination of material in the laboratory. Three days of excursion in the Boulonnais region (sensu lato; N of France) will be organized for the study of the flora and vegetation of salt marshes and sand dunes.
Further on, the course will concentrate on detailed questions of phylogeny and thus on the reconstruction of the plants evolutionary history. The question is how to determine the evolutionary history of organisms on the basis of measured characters.
The course will end with a debate based on several papers and debates published in the most recent issues of scientific journals.
Course objective :  - Expertise on observation methods and study of organisms and field work
- Theory introduction to concepts and methods of modern phylogeny (on the basis of very diverse characters, incl. DNA sequences)
- Application to phylogenetic reconstruction, with exercices on a data matrix
- Synthesis of molecular phylogeny imputs on taxonomy, phylogeography and conservation biology of angiosperms.
Prerequisites :  To first attend the course BOTA0207-1 - Understanding and fluent use of French language
Workshops :  See above
Organization :  In the class room with slides. Laboratory work on plant material and phylogeny excercise on computer. Field excursions
Written notes :  No complete syllabus, but numerous documents available (glossary, summaries, maps, figures, etc. ¿ some of them in english). Documents will progressively be available on the Ulg Intranet.
Assessment :  Synthetic and critical talk on the basis of a paper on molecular systematic of Angiosperms
