BOTA0215-1  Biochemical systematics and evolution
Duration :  20h Th, 20h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
"licencié" biological sciences (biology of plants), 2nd year4
Holder(s) :  Vincent Demoulin
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  -Introduction: history of methods in classification, influence of evolution concepts on systematics. 3h.
-Numerical methods in classification. 3h.
-Phylogenetic use of protein and nucleotide sequences. 8h.
-Functional role of amino-acids or nucleotides vs. neutral mutations. 1h.
-Other methods than sequencing applied to macromolecules. 1h.
-Small molecules (chemiotaxonomy). 4h.
Practical teaching incudes an ARDRA application on ribosomial DNA and lichenic acids chromatography to illustrate chemiotaxonomy.
Un important part is devoted to phylogenetic reconstruction on the base of sequences with consulting of data bases and comparison of various programs.
Course objective :  The course aims at demonstrating the importance of biochemical characters for systematics and some aspects of their evolution. Small molecules (chemiotaxonomy and evolution of chemical defence in plants) are studied but the main accent is on macromolecules and especially amino-acids and nucleotide sequences. Those are envisionned as tools in phylogenetic reconstruction and various methods used for that purpose are examined critically and applied during the practical teaching. The course can also interest students in animal biology and biochemistry.
Prerequisites :  Preferably possess the elements of biology, biochemistry and mathematics of the level of biology "candidatures".
Workshops :  Practical teaching is performed during a few days when the theorethical teaching is completed. They are located in the laboratory of Algology, mycology and experimental systematics and allow the use of several of its equipments.
Organization :   Course of the first quadrimester with location in the Botanical Institute, B.22. Theoretical lectures Tuesday and Wednesday from 8h45 to 10h15 with the first lecture on Tuesday 3/10/06. Practical teaching on 15,18,19 and 20th december.
Written notes :  Photocopies of illustrations and especially interesting papers are distributed. Books are presented for information but their consultation is not necessary for the understanding of the course.
Assessment :  Oral examination worth 2/3 of the final note and note of the report from practical teaching accounting for 1/3.
