BOTA0214-1  Ecology - additional issues
Duration :  15h Th, 15h Pr, 1d FW
Credits/ECTS :
"licencié" biological sciences (biology of plants), 2nd year3
Holder(s) :  Monique Carnol
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  This course is divided into two parts:
Experimental approaches in plant ecology : Introduction, the scientific method, methods of ecosystem study, planification of experiments, tools for data analyses.
Plant ecology in a changing world: climate change and carbon budgets; Air pollution, biodiversity and ecosystem functioning.
Course objective :  - To become aware of the scientific method and the implications of spatial and temporal variability for ecosystem studies. These notions will be useful for most students in planning their experiments during the 'mémoire de licence'.
- Providing the scientific basis for understanding actual environmental problems.
Prerequisites :  Basic/detailed concepts in ecology are useful, but notabsolutely necessary.
Workshops :  During the practicals, students will analyse bacterial diversity in soils, using molecular methods (soil DNA extraction, PCR, DGGE)
Organization :  Lectures 90 minutes (power point presentations)
Written notes :  Essential concepts and power point illustrations are available. The understanding of concepts is based on the explanations given during the lectures. Additional information can be obtained from reference books available in the laboratory.
