Course objective :  This course if a part of BOTA0207-1, and is given simultaneously. Please refer to the complete description of it for more information.

Its objectives are:

Introduction to fundamental concepts of modern taxonomy and phylogeny, with practice on higher plants (from bryophytes to angiosperms) and to speciation mechanisms

Expertise on the characters of the most important families of angiosperms and their evolution; idem for the bryophytes (mosses and liverworts)

Expertise with the use of the Flora of Belgium

Survey of the most important vegetation types in our regions and expertise on description methods

Understanding the causes and mechanisms explaining the biodiversity, with a survey of most hypotheses (from the Red Queen theory to the Wallace line in S-E Asia)

And thus getting in touch with the stakes of biodiversity sustaining management
Prerequisites :  Basic elements of angiosperms morphology, especially flowers and organs
Basic expertise on the Flora of Belgium
Understanding and fluent use of French
Organization :  Indoor lectures with slides. Private cars and/or minibus for excursions.
Written notes :  No complete syllabus, but numerous documents available (summaries, maps, figures, etc. ¿ some of them in english). Documents will progressively be available on the Ulg Intranet.
Assessment :  Written exam
