Duration :  20h Th, 1d FW
Credits/ECTS :
Bachelor in geographical sciences, general orientation, 2nd yearDeuxième quadrimestre3
One-year preliminary programme leading to the Master in Geographical Sciences, Climatology orientation3
Holder(s) :  Arlette Noels‑Grötsch
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  The first part of the course is devoted to classical astronomy. After a brief survey of the history of astronomy, the celestial sphere is introduced together with different systems of coordinates. With these tools, celestial motions of the earth, sun and stars are described. A special emphasis is given to the the explanation of the seasons. Different time definitions are introduced and the time zones and the different calendars are presented.

In the second part, the internal structure of stars and their evolution are discussed.

The third part is dedicated to the extragalactic Universe. Simple cosmological models are presented.
Course objective :  This course aims at giving the students basic notions of their astronomical environment in order to help them understand the Earth and stellar motions, the different time definitions, the structure of the stars and of the Universe.
Prerequisites :  Elementary notions of physics and mathematics are required. Certain aspects more specialized are reviewed in the course.
Organization :  The course is scheduled according to the official programme. Exercise sessions are organized in place of the theoretical course.
Written notes :  A syllabus is available.
Assessment :  A written exam on the theory and on the exercises is organized. An oral test is scheduled during the session for those who fail in the written exam. The ponderation is 2/3 for the exam and 1/3 for the oral test.
