| Course contents : | After having explained what is anthropology, we will follow its development until 1950. First, we will go back to the foundations of anthropological knowledge between the 16th and the 18th century. Then, we will study evolutionism, which is associated with the entry of anthropology in the academia at the end of the 19th century. From this evolutionist starting point, three national traditions emerged at the beginning of the 20th century: British anthropology, American anthropology and French anthropology. As they are at the origins of 'modern anthropology', each of them will be discussed in detail during the remaining sessions. |
 |
| Course objective : | Introduce students to the key concepts and tools of anthropology by studying its history before 1950. By the end of the course, students will have to show a critical knowledge of 'classical' theories in the discipline. |
