| Aperçu général : | The Fifty Foot Woman and the Amazing Colossal Man: American Literature, Culture and History of the 1950s
Charlotte Nekola (Fulbright professor)
This course addresses the social and intellectual climate of the United States in the 1950s. It provides a context for science fiction writers concerned with proliferating technology such as Ray Bradbury, for forerunners of the Civil Rights movement such as Lorraine Hansberry, for social commentators such as Arthur Miller, and beat writers such as Allen Ginsberg and Diane DiPrima. We will examine films that pinpoint anxieties of the 1950s, such as Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Imitation of Life, and discuss such relevant issues as the discovery of DNA, the resurgence of car culture, abstract expressionism, the McCarthy trials, the Civil Rights movement, and the growth of suburbia. |
