Course contents : This course is subdivided in two parts of 30 hours each.

In the first part, we start by giving an introduction to descriptive statistical methods which permit to summarize a data set either graphically or numerically. Then we turn to inferential statistics, the basis of scientific reasoning, which consist in making conclusions on a population from a random sample drawn from it. The student will learn about classical statistical tests and the use of statistical tables (random numbers, Normal, Student t, Snedecor F and chi-squared distributions).

The second part of the course tackles more advanced statistical methods, like regression, one-way and two-way analysis of variance, contingency tables and non-parametric techniques.

Each course consists of a theoretical lecture followed by a practical session, where the student will be trained in the treatment of data applications encountered in practice.
Course objective : The course is intended to get students familiar with statistical problems and data analysis. Emphasis is placed on the scientific reasoning rather than on the mathematical aspects of statistics or the formula to use. Students should have a sufficiently solid knowledge in statistics for the years ahead, and in particular for the thesis they have to write at the end of their curriculum.
Prerequisites : The mathematical training received in BAC1 is sufficient to take the course. As already mentioned, emphasis is placed the potential of statistical methods in experimental design and scientific research.
Workshops : Les travaux pratiques débuteront dès la première leçon théorique, à savoir le jeudi 21 septembre 2006. Ils ont lieu dans le même auditoire de 16h30 à 18h00. La statistique étant aussi et surtout l'expérience pratique, la présence à ces séances est obligatoire, même si certains exercices peuvent être terminés à domicile.

Les travaux pratiques se termineront le jour du dernier cours, soit le jeudi 21 décembre 2006.
Organization : The course starts on Thursday 22 September 2005 at 14:00 in the auditorium 02 (and after the 6th course in auditorium 01) at the Mathematic Institute (Bldg B37, Pkg P32). In general, the theoretical lecture lasts until 16:30 with a 10-15 min break. The course is taught at the blackboard and slides will illustrate the methods presented. The last lecture will be held on Thursday 22 December 2005.

The practical sessions start right on the first day. They take place in the same auditorium from 16:30 to 18:00. Exercises can be finished at home if necessary. They will end on 22 December 2005.
Written notes : Students will have to buy the lecture notes "Biostatistics, A. Albert, edition 2005" at the secretarial office of Professor A. Albert (School of Public Health, University Hospital, CHU, B35) at the cost of 15 EUR. This book contains the course material as well the main statistical tables. It will be used during exercise sessions and at the final examination. Finally, it can be used as a reference book in biostatistics in subsequent years.

Assessment : A written exam will take place in January. It lasts for about 4 hours. Any score of 10 or more will be considered as a success. All exams are written exams and students can used their lectures notes or any other documents. Exams are scored 0-20.

Exercises will be evaluated regularly to assess the student's level in statistics.
