Introduction to quantitative methods and elements of statistics

Course contents : 1. Brief history
2. Presentation of data (graphs, histograms,...)
3. Characterisation of data (central values, dispersion)
4. Sampling (techniques, properties)
5. Normal law. Confidence intervals
6. Polls. Analysis of proportions
7. Correlation
Course objective : The aims of this lecture are:
- to explain the basic concepts of statistical methods
- to help understanding and interpreting statistical data (e.g. opinion polls)
- to judge how thrustworthy their are
- to detect some common 'tricks'

The aim is to allow non-mathematically oriented students to understand the most essential statistical concepts, in order to help them becoming well informed users.
Prerequisites : None
Workshops : Exercises in the second parts of the lectures, under the teacher's guidance.
Organization : The lectures are divided in two parts:
1. Theory
2. Exercises

The exercises are corrected each week and the marks obtained allow to accumulate a "boni" for the examination.

An Internet version of the lecture is also available, with some interactive exercises.
Written notes : Lecture notes written by the teacher, available in printed version, and as a Word file and Internet version.
Assessment : Written examination.
1. Multiple choice questionnaire on the theory.
2. Exercises similar to those made during the courses.
