| Course contents : | The course deals with culture (arts) as a form of political expression. More particularly, it will examine to what extent popular culture (pop music, popular literature, cinema, etc.) acquire a political relevance (protest, anti-racism, anti-globalization movement defence of minorities, etc.). A specific focus will be put on immigrant and ethnic minorities artistic productions. | ||||||||

| Course objective : | The aim of the course is to make students aware of the political relevance of popular arts in contemporary societies. | ||||||||

| Prerequisites : | A passive knowledge of written and spoken English is indispensable. | ||||||||

| Organization : | The course could use various pedagogical tools: - Lectures by the teacher - Seminars based on the use of video supports - Seminars based on the reading and discussion of texts as well as on presentations made by students - Lectures given by foreign guests - A period of independent studies during which students will prepare a written course paper or participate in a field survey. Depending on the number of students registered, some of these 5 tools will be privileged. | ||||||||

| Assessment : | First session: participation in class and/or a written course paper (50%) + a written examination (50%) In the second session, the examination will be oral. | ||||||||

| Remarks : | Topics for the course paper (EXAMPLES) 1) Expression of minorities' identities through cultural mediums such as: -music -songs -cinema -literature -theater -specialized press -multiple forms of art ( painting, sculptures, drafts, caricatures etc. ..) 2) African American's cinema in the United States 3) Indian cinema in the United States ( Bollywood) 4) The ethnic renewal manifested by groups of European decent in the United States 5) The use of religion as a medium to spread political messages More generally it might be interesting to look at the church as a political institution and its specific use for immigrants and minority groups as a key institution in the integration process. 6) The socio-political impact of ethnic festivals 7) The Christian movement: its expression through music, television broadcasting, in the US and in Europe - what does it mean, their messages, who do they target? ( in the American context, it might be interesting to link their growing importance to the neoconservative trend, especially after 9/11) 8) The political impact of the punk scene 9) The hippy movement and American politics 10) Southern Rock and Racism 11) Rock against Racism and British Politics 14) etc.... / | ||||||||
