Partim III : pathologie et autopsies

The main morphologic and physiologic particularities of marine mammals are reviewed, in relation with pathology and diseases. Classification and main causes of diseases are then examined in particular in association with human activities and in regards to the major threats on those species. An accent is placed on the difference between diseases of cetaceans and pinnipeds, with a special focus on morbillivirus infections and diagnostic procedures available. Finally attention is drawn on diagnostic in particular necropsies and associated techniques.
Course objective : -

Partim III : pathologie et autopsies

The general objective of the course is to help students to learn and recognize the main diseases and lesions of marine mammals, to train students to identify and interpret the various techniques of diagnosis (necropsy, toxicology, microbiology). Also the course aims to relocate these observations within their scientific, environmental, and societal context.
Prerequisites : -

Partim III : pathologie et autopsies

Prerequisite for the course is a completed university secondary degree in veterinary medicine, zoology, biomedical sciences, or any degree considered to be equivalent.
Workshops : -

Partim III : pathologie et autopsies

Three seminars of practical training are being offered. The first illustrates the morphologic and pathologic particularities of marine mammals by comparison with a domestic animal. The second will be a necropsy of a harbour porpoise and a necropsy of a seal, to familiarize the student with the technical procedure and with sampling techniques. The last will be devoted to diagnostic techniques as they apply to morbillivirus diseases (immunohistochemistry).
