Probability and statistics II

Course contents : The content consists mainly of the detailed development of the methods of statistical inference : sampling distributions, estimation, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing,... A brief introduction to linear regression is also provided.
Course objective : Make the student familiar with the most basic and important statistical methods which will be of use in all the more specialized statistics courses available in the master degree in mathematical sciences.
Prerequisites : MATH0253-1 Probability and statistics I
Organization : The courses and the tutorials/practicals are given over the two semesters according to a timetable distributed to the students in the beginning of the academic year. The 40 hours of practicals will be divided into tutorials and practicals in the computer room of the mathematical Institute.
Written notes : Notes (on the theory and on the exercises) are given to the students.
Assessment : The final mark is a weighted mean of the marks attributed to the three following assesments:

- personal homework giving rise to a written report as well as an oral examination (the same day as the oral exam below)

-written exam on exercises during the period of examination of May-June.

- oral exam on theory during the period of examination of May-June.
