Discourse analysis and typology

Course contents : The course begins with a presentation of the general theory of

  • principles, issues and methods for analyzing discourse;
  • its structural, enunciative, pragmatic, intertextual, generic, and sociolinguistic viewpoints,
  • its relationship with the other fields of linguistics and language sciences.
We will then carry out an in-depth examination of a specific issue, i.e., that of the text (definition, function, functioning), and/or features of discourse (scientific, medical, comical, etc.).


The selection for the corpus is based on the participants' interests or their personal projects, and the participants are expected to take active part in the analytical work.
Course objective : Introduce the participants to the principles and analytical methods of discourse, and give them an opportunity to put them into practice to clarify the issues and the functioning of various kinds of discourse, or of discursive systems generally.
Prerequisites : Some knowledge in linguistics.
Workshops : After presenting the theory, the course is organized as a seminar to which each of the participants contributes according to his/her speciality, readings and/or an individual work he/she will present or draft.
Organization : 30 hours of course time, 1st or 2nd semester.
Place and time: to be arranged
Written notes : A syllabus as well as various bibliographic documents and references are communicated to the participants throughout the course. Audiovisual and multimedia material is also used according to the themes approached and to the needs.
Assessment : Oral or written exam, or individual work, according to the participants' projects.

Remarks : Throughout the presentation of the theory, the students are expected to participate actively in the discussions provoked and the practical exercises and case studies that are put to them.

An alternative programme may be suggested to students who are unable to attend the course.
