Course contents : This course is also part of a cross-section programme in gender studies. It focuses on a dozen women poets writing in English in the last century (particularly in the last three decades).
Course objective : The course has three main objectives:
share the pleasure of reading poems,
contextualise within historical and cultural developments,
vindicate the literary position of women.
Prerequisites : A good knowledge of English.
Workshops : The course is taught in seminar form: students are therefore actively involved.
Organization : The course is taught in the first term, probably on Tuesday 11-1. First class on Tuesday 26 September. Interested students can sign their names on a posted list.
Written notes : Some poems will be handed out in class, but students are advised to get hold of the following anthologies:
- The Bloodaxe Book of Contemporary Women Poets, Jeni Couzyn ed., Bloodaxe, 2000,
- Modern Women Poets, Deryn Rees-Jones ed., Bloodaxe, 2005.
Assessment : Students are assessed on
their participation in class,
a 3000-word essay,
an oral examination in January.
