Course contents : The course presents a range of plays, theoretical texts and essays on criminal violence in contemporary African American drama from the 1960s to the present day. Through a close reading of plays and essays, and through the analysis of their historical context, the course seeks to unravel the ideological shifts as well as aesthetic transformations in the theatrical representation of violence and crime.
Course objective : Introduction to contemporary African American theatre; close reading of recent African American plays.
Prerequisites : good command of English
Workshops : active participation in class, individual preparation of particular aspects of the course
Organization : seminar of 30h a week, 2nd semester
Written notes : a syllabus of plays, articles and essays can be bought at the beginning of the course, recent plays can be purchased at Audivox
Assessment : June: oral exam
