Course contents : For business students:

1. In-class course (60 hours)

This course is based on the book "Intelligent Business". It includes the following:



  • Speaking and communication activities in business English: discussions, dialogues, role-plays, oral presentations, press reviews, etc.
  • Reading comprehension of texts from the Internet or the British and American press dealing with economic- and business-related topics.
  • Quick revision of some grammar points and improvement of the students' command of the language.
  • Further study of business vocabulary.
  • Writing tasks: business letters, graph descriptions, etc.
2. Language lab (30 hours)

  • Listening comprehension and speaking activities based on audio and video recordings dealing with economics- and business-related topics.
For sociology students:

This course is based on the study of the language and vocabulary specific to sociology. Students will mainly be asked to write essays and give oral presentations on the different topics dealt with in John J. Macionis and Ken Plummer's Sociology - A Global Introduction.

The course will also include the advanced study of English grammar and will exercise the students' skills in listening and reading to sociology-oriented texts.
Course objective : For business students:

Improving the four skills, namely listening and reading comprehension, speaking and writing, in professional situations of the world of business and economics.

For sociology students:

Improving the four skills, namely listening, reading, speaking and writing, particularly in the context of the academic study of sociology.
Prerequisites : This is an upper-intermediate to advanced level business course. It corresponds to ALTE level 4 or Council of Europe level C1. The level required to take this course is intermediate to upper-intermediate, ALTE level 3 or Council of Europe level B2, which corresponds to the level of the Level-2 English course ("Anglais 2").
Organization : For business students:

The in-class course is taught to about 25 students for two hours every week for the 60-hour course and 3 hours a week (2 hours in class and 1 hour in the lab) for the 90-hour course. Students are required to prepare the exercises, vocabulary and texts from the coursebook every week. This preparation work varies in time depending on the students' previous knowledge. Regular work is essential as students are expected to participate actively in class discussions and debates.

For sociology students:

The class is taught for two hours every week over the two semesters.

Attendance is mandatory on days when compulsory assignments have been planned.

  • "Level 3 '2+3' or '3+3' Business English Course supplement 2006-2007", ISLV: available at Intercopy in Sart Tilman or rue St Gilles in Liège from September 26th onwards.
  • "Level 3" English: Listening Comprehension and video activities for the language Lab" ISLV available from Intercopy (in October).
  • "Terror Inc" (2004) by L.Napoleoni OR "The End of Poverty" (2004) by J.Sachs, Penguin books OR "Nickel and Dimed" by B. Ehrenreich. Students should choose and order their book on the first day of class.

  • "English Grammar in Use" (intermediate) and "Advanced Grammar in Use", Cambridge University Press.

For sociology students:

  • "Sociology: A Global Introduction - Third edition" by John J. Macionis and Ken Plummer, published by Pearson.
  • "Advanced Language Practice" by Michael Vince, published by MacMillan.
The books will be on sale (at a discount) between 11.30 - 14.00, Monday 25 September, in front of Amphis 500 and 300, Sart Tilman.
Assessment : For business students:

1. Continuous assessment (3/20):

  • Progress test on December 16th.
  • 2 writing exercises in class: e.g. business letter (1/20) During the weeks of the 23rd October and the 26th March.
  • 4 grammar tests (2/20). During the weeks of the 6th November, the 11th December, the 12th March and the 12th April.
2. Written exam (8/20 for the 90-hour course, 9/20 for the 60-hour course):

  • Reading comprehension exercises based on an unseen text.
  • Vocabulary exercises.
  • Grammar exercises.
  • Writing exercise.
3. Oral exam (6/20):

  • Oral presentation in class based on one of the topics in the coursebook in groups of 2 students (2/20).
  • 15-minute discussion about the book chosen for the oral exam (4/20).
4. Listening comprehension exam (2/20 for the 60-hour course, 3/20 for the 90-hour course)

The exam will take place in the lab during the last two weeks of class.

For sociology students:

1. Continuous assessment: 3/20



  • Several compulsory language tests will be organised during the year.
  • Students will have to hand in 4 essays. Topics will be picked among the topics dealt with in class. Essays will have to be handed in by the last day of November, December, February and March. No delay will be allowed.
2. Oral presentations: 3/20

  • Each student will have to give two oral presentations over the course of the year. Presentations will be given in pairs.
3. Written exam: 7/20

  • Reading comprehension exercises based on an unseen text.
  • Vocabulary exercises.
  • Grammar exercises.
  • Writing exercise.
4. Examen oral: 7/20

  • Based on the topics dealt with in class.
NB: The marks obtained for work during the year count for both exam sessions in May and August.
