Course contents : 1. Introduction to communication : transmitter - receiver - communication media, information coding, data compression mode
2. Netwoks architecture : centralized, decentralized, distributes, client/server
3. Communication protocol : definition, OSI reference model
4. Local area networks (LAN)
4.1. Physical layer : cabling system, wireless LAN, topology, hardware devices, repeater, concentrator
4.2. Datalink layer : network access modes (contention, token, polling) + hardware devices : Switch - Bridge
5. TCP/IP Protocols

5.1 IP addressing system, Address Distribution ( DHCP, etc..)

5.2 Domain name, DNS.

5.3 Router, Routing principles and protocols

5.4 Transport Protocols in TCP/IP

5.5 Intranet - Internet - Extranet

6. Wide area network (WAN,MAN)
6.1. Physical layer : analog network, digital network, mobile network
6.2. Data link layer : analog network (PPP, HDLC), digital network (xDSL)
6.3 . Network layer : analog network (25), digital network (frame relay)
7. Introduction to broadbord networks
Course objective : The content of this course is coordinated with "Telecommunications" in 4th year of engineering. The course focuses on computer netwoks and communication protocol ( software) whereas the course "Telecommunications" focuses on the physics of communication ( analog telephony, digital telephony, sattelite communication, etc.)
Prerequisites : SI 614 Computer Science
Organization : The course is mainly based on presentations illustrated, when possible, with demonstrations on computers and / or visits in HEC's computer center
