Rights of the Child

Course contents : This course deals with the content, interpretation, implementation and monitoring of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) as one of the international (UN) human rights instruments. Attention will be paid to the so-called 'Trias pedagogica' of children, parents and the state, and to the possible impact of the CRC on national legislation, policy and practice.

Various specific topics like child abuse, neglect and exploitation, harmful traditional practices, transgenerational discrimination ('transism'), child protection reform, preparation to parenthood, parental duties, empowerment of parents, aims of education and participation of children, and others selected by students, will be presented and discussed more in-depth.

The second half of this course is devoted to selected international children's rights issues, on which papers may be written and presented by the students.
