| Course contents : | Process of erosion, transport, sedimentation, burial and deformation. Formation and nature of magmatic and metamorphic rocks. Methods of datation of rocks. Geological evolution of Belgium in connection with the plates tectonics and the general evolution of the biosphere. | ||||||||

| Course objective : | Definition of the domains of the Earth sciences. Description of the main geological phenomena. Basic knowledge allowing to determine the main types of rocks and to understand their origine, to read and to understand the geological maps. | ||||||||

| Prerequisites : | Basic knowledge in chemistry, physics and biology. | ||||||||
| |||||||||
| Workshops : | Practical works in classroom are devoted to the determination of main minerals and rocks, and to the reading and interpretation of the geological maps. Practical works on the field are devoted to illustrate the course and the practical works in classroom, and to allow the student to recognize in concrete terms rocks and geological phenomena. | ||||||||

| Organization : | Course during the first period in building B18, Sart Tilman. Practical works in classroom and on the field during the second period. | ||||||||

| Written notes : | An abstract is given to students but has to be completed by personal notes and by consulting geological treatises. | ||||||||

| Assessment : | Written exam on the course and practical works (for 30% of the score). Practical exam for determining rocks and reading a geological map (30%). oral exam on the whole course (40%) | ||||||||
