Quaternary and global changes studies

Course contents : Partim: "Study of Quaternary". The course is structured in chapters sets of themes: methods of dating, variations of volume of the icecaps, glacio-eustatic variations of the sea level, glacio-isostasy, evolution of the hydrographic networks related to climatic alternations, paleomagnetism, lithostratigraphy of the surface grounds, palynology, animal paleontology, the archaeology, climatic variations recorded in the long glacial and oceanic sequences, causes of the glaciations. In all the chapters where that is possible, priority is given to the examples existing in Belgium, both for stratigraphy and geomorphology.



Partim: "Global Changes". The course is structured in chapters sets of themes: Effects of the relations Earth-Sun, the oceans/continents distribution and the general atmospheric circulation on the climatic mechanisms. Variations recorded by the sets of instrumental climatic data (availability and comparison), measurements and estimates of gases for purpose of greenhouse effect, anthropic pressure on the environment and their effects on the climatic disasters and damage to environment.
Course objective : Partim: "Study of Quaternary": To recall the history of the evolution of the surface of the ground and the environmental changes during the last 2 million years. To locate the current environments in this evolutionary context.



Partim: "Global Changes": To primarily retrace the evolution of the climates on the Earth surface during the last 2 centuries. To specify the impact of the anthropic activities on the modifications of the current environments.
Prerequisites : Basic concepts in physics, chemistry (isotopes), geology and geomorphology
Workshops : The theoretical course, partim "Study of Quaternary" is supplemented by two integrated working days of ground including/understanding: loess like a) study of stratotypes (Hesbaye); b) geomorphology, sedimentology, paleontology and archaeology (the Beautiful-Rock) of Amblève lower; c) evolution plio-pleistocene of the course of the Meuse de Seraing in Limbourg.
Organization : The course is given in 3 hours meetings effective (interruptions in addition).
Written notes : Partim: "Study of Quaternary": notes of course and work in the fields distributed to the students by E Juvigné.

Partim: "Global Changes": notes and sheets distributed to the students by Mr. Erpicum
Assessment : Partim "Studies of Quaternary": one 3 hours duration written examination; a particular importance is attached to all the documents illustrating the written notes. To answer the questions relating to work of ground the students will be able to consult their personal notes.

Partim "Global Changes": one 2 hours duration written examination.

The numeric evaluation is single and each partim intervenes for 50%.
