Introduction to Economical Geography

Course contents : The theoretical course is divided in four parts. The first part (3h) is related to the history of economic geography within the perspective of the evolution of the geography in general, in order to precise the originality of both, its methods and its issues. The second and the third parts are related with the study of two major resources: energy (9h) and agriculture (9h). This analysis is related with the production, but also with market mechanisms as well as with environmental issues. The fourth part is dealing with transport geography (9h): network implementation, supply and demand, key-players and impacts.
Course objective : The objective of the course is to give an introduction to the issue of economic geography, in relation with three key-areas : energy geography, agriculture geography, transport geography.
Prerequisites : Course of Bac 1 : "Introduction à la géographie économique et sociale"
Course of Bac 2 : "Economie politique générale" (J. Defourny).
Workshops : See herafter "Organisation"
Organization : - 10 sessions (3 hours) of theoretical lectures
- 5 sessions of workshops on basic learning processes:(critical reading of a text, statistical data analysis, graphic realization) and realization of a powerpoint presentation about a topical question
- 2,5 days of fieldwork : 1 day for the visit of 2 electric power plant, 0,5 day for the visit of 2 farms et 1 day for the visit of the Antwerp harbour.

Assessment : Oral exam (with a 30 minutes written preparation) = 75% of the quotation
Powerpoint presentation related to a question of the day in relation to one of the three parts of the theortical course = 25% of the quotation.
