Radioactive Waste Management - Visits to Nuclear Plants

Duration :20h Th, 2d FW
Credits/ECTS :
Master in sciences and management environment3
1st year of Master's degree in sciences and management environment,3
Holder(s) :Véra Pirlet
Course contents : The radioactive waste management is an important part of the nuclear fuel cycle. The production of nuclear electricity in Belgium is about 58 %. Although the more irradiating waste is coming from the nuclear power plants, other numerous small companies, as hospitals or universities to give an example, generate radioactive waste. Although these waste are managed in an appropriate way, the topic of "nuclear waste" is still very controversy. Nevertheless, the radioactive waste management is probably an example to be followed for the management of other types of dangerous waste.
Course objective : To give an overview of the specific management required for the different types of nuclear waste, not only in Belgium but also in an international level. A good understanding of the subject requires an introduction to the general topic of « radioactivity ».
Prerequisites : Scientific knowledges chemistry-biology or engineering.
Workshops : Two visits of nuclear installations are foreseen at the end of the courses: Hall of disposal of radioactive waste management of the University of Liège and Deep underground laboratory for the disposal of highly radioactive waste in the Belgian Nuclear Research Center or Belgoprocess company (Federal site of the temporary disposal of the Belgian radioactive waste all categories).
Organization : The courses are given in the afternoon (2 times 3 hours per week).
Written notes : Notes are distributed at the beginning of the session.
Assessment : Oral examination.
