 |
 | - Introduction - Definitions: groundwater resources advantages and drawback, relative importance in the world, in Belgium, in Walloon region. - Hydrological cycle and water balance of a basin, groundwater reserves. - Confined, water table and perched aquifers: definitions and examples, importance of a clear geological understanding when defining hydrogeological conditions. - Hydrogeological parameters and groundwater flow equations: hydrostatic, porosities, hydraulic conductivity and Darcy's law, intrinsic permeability, generalisation, application, limitations, measurements on field, piezometric maps, application examples, transmissivity, steady state groundwater flow in saturated conditions, specific storage coefficient, transient flow in confined and water table aquifers. - Hydrochemical state of groundwater, main principles of protection zones, vulnerability mapping. |
 | | Collection of environmental information |

 |
 | - Definition of the problem and of its objectives - Introduction to sampling procedures - Planification of the data collection process (what ? where? with which precision ?) - Choice and application of the measuring sensors - Fundamental principles: sensor types, influence factors, constraints of field measurement, metrological characteristics: error, calibration, limits, sensitivity, response time, drift, resolution, ...
The lecture is based on real life examples concerning the environment. |
 | | Environmental data processing - statistical and mathematical tools |

 |
 | On the basis of concrete examples drawn from environmental studies
- preparation of data processing (coding, missing data, outliers, computer files)
- selection of data processing method in function of the objectives of the environmental study
- short and concrete presentation of various graphical and mathematical processing tools (filtering, smoothing, harmonic analysis, ...) and of statistical tools (descriptive statistics, regressions, analysis of variance, factor analysis, ...) in the frame of environmental studies

| Course objective :
|
 | | Hydrogeology in water integrated management |

 |
 | Allow the student to obtain a basic knowledge about hydrogeology and groundwater flow problems. |
 | | Collection of environmental information |

 |
 | Explaining the main principles and the conditions of data collection. The aim is to allow the student to examine the data collection methods with a critical eye. |
 | | Environmental data processing - statistical and mathematical tools |

 |
 | Leading the student to select a suitable data processing method in the frame of an environmental study and to interpret the results with criticism. |
| |
| | | |
| Prerequisites :
