Course contents :

Environmental data processing - statistical and mathematical tools

On the basis of concrete examples drawn from environmental studies

  • preparation of data processing (coding, missing data, outliers, computer files)
  • selection of data processing method in function of the objectives of the environmental study
  • short and concrete presentation of various graphical and mathematical processing tools (filtering, smoothing, harmonic analysis, ...) and of statistical tools (descriptive statistics, regressions, analysis of variance, factor analysis, ...) in the frame of environmental studies

Decision-making aid: methods of multicriteria analysis

This course is an initiation with the decision-making aid seen under the multicriteria analysis standpoint. It begins with some examples and a short history entitled: "Of the aggregation of the votes to the Arrow's theorem". Then, two schools are presented in parallel: the French school with the methods of the type Condorcet (ELECTRE) and the American school with the methods of the type Borda (Composite Programming). Small simple examples make it possible to the student to seize the governing ideas of both methods and to compare them.
Course objective :

Environmental data processing - statistical and mathematical tools

Leading the student to select a suitable data processing method in the frame of an environmental study and to interpret the results with criticism.

Decision-making aid: methods of multicriteria analysis

To understand the bases of the multicriteria analysis and to be able to carry out elementary calculations in EXCEL.
Prerequisites :

Environmental data processing - statistical and mathematical tools

Descriptive statistics and basic mathematics (logarithm, integral, derivative)

Decision-making aid: methods of multicriteria analysis

None.
Workshops :

Environmental data processing - statistical and mathematical tools

12 hours of processing of real data in the computer room

Decision-making aid: methods of multicriteria analysis

Four to five students set up a group to which the professor proposes a real problem already dealt with. The students must simplify it by reducing the number of criteria and the number of actions. Then, they solve this new problem with the two methods seen with the course. Finally, each group presents its work at the other groups. The spokesman of the group is randomly drawn what implies that all the students must be able to present the work of their own group.
Organization :

Environmental data processing - statistical and mathematical tools

Assessment :

Environmental data processing - statistical and mathematical tools

the 6 last hours of practical works are based on the study of a real life environmental example and are evaluated
