This course aims at providing some generic intellectual skills : problem definition, objectives, work strategy and evaluation.

This is an introduction to the qualitative research practices through the empirical mastery of the interviews' methodology.

Course objective :

Learning tools

For students and professionals, environmental problems imply a specific work of critical appraisal, of problematisation and choice of perspective in order to define objectives, strategies and evaluation criteria. These skills are developed through use of mind mapping techniques.

Fieldwork Methodology

The objective of the course is to acquire the ability to realize exploratory interviews and to proceed to an initial coding process.

The kind of questions that will be adressed are the following ones : How to make a guide for the interviews ? how to manage the interview's situations ? how to initiate a first data treatement (coding process, passage from the data to the argument, etc.) ? how to present the results of your analysis ?

Fieldwork Practices

Students will be introduced to quantitative methdology in social science. The objective is to give them a comprehensive approach of quantitative data especially on data collection (questionnaire, interpretation).

The course uses many examples in the environmental field. Emphasis is pit on a critical approach of social categories in the methods.
Prerequisites :

This course is open to both students in experimental sciences and students in social sciences or in humanities.

This course is open to all students, from social science and form natural sciences.

The training will be supported by both a one week fieldwork (DDGE6 - Fieldworks) and the running of a qualitative data analysis software named NVivo 2.

This is a seminar oriented type of course. It is constituted by the presentation of a minimum of contents and by practical work.
