Chemistry of Dental Materials

- Introduction : definitions, choice of dental materials and properties used to characterize them.

-Matter states (alloys and amalgams)

-Solubility of mineral salts (including dental enamel) and influence of the pH and fluorure anion

-General properties of polymers and their more specific use in dentistry.
Course objective :

Chemistry preparing to medical and dentistry sciences

The course is organized to give the student an unified view of a science that has a key role in the life world. The principles of general chemistry are taught in strong relation to organic chemistry. The ultimate purpose of the course is to provide the student with a mastery of chemistry such that he/she can understand how molecules of a biological interest are built up and are working.

Chemistry of Dental Materials

To demonstrate the importance of the chemical properties of materials used every day in the dental practice in relation with their ultimate fate ( filling materials, inlays, partial or total dentures, restoration materials, etc...)
Prerequisites :

Chemistry preparing to medical and dentistry sciences

Basic knowledge taught in the secondary school, including chemical elements (symbol and electronic structure), chemical bonding, matter and quantities (concentration, stoichiometry), acid-base and oxydo-reduction equilibria.
These prerequisites are "reactivated" by a one-week cycle of courses introductory to the 1st bac classes in chemistry.
Remedial modules (and assistants) are available to students who need help.

Chemistry of Dental Materials

Basic course of general and organic chemistry
Workshops :

Chemistry preparing to medical and dentistry sciences

1st semester
6 half days devoted to quantitative analyses (titrimetry, colorimetry) separation techniques (chromatography), chemical equilibrium and chemical kinetics.
2nd semester
3 half days devoted to the main organic functions, to organic synthesis and to analysis by electrophoresis.
Organization :

Chemistry preparing to medical and dentistry sciences

1st semester
- Two courses a week: Tuesday 1:30 - 3:00 pm (A500) - Thursday : 1:30 - 3:30 pm (A303).
- Revision or written text, once a week.
2nd semester
- One course a week: Friday 8:30 - 10:00 am (A303).
- Revision (3) and written tests (2)
Remedial courses (once a week)

Chemistry of Dental Materials

1h30 per week in the second quadrimester during 7 or 8 weeks.
An interactive reexamination of the course is programmed some days before the written examination (according to the wishes of the students).
Written notes :

Chemistry preparing to medical and dentistry sciences

1 Notebook for the courses taught during the 1st semester.
1 Notebook for the practical exercises.
1 CD-Rom for the courses of the 2nd semester.
