Course contents : Local and global pollution. Combustion : a source of atmospheric pollution. Thermodynamics and kinetics of emission of the main combustion pollutants : carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, VOC, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, soots and ashes. Combustion and global pollution. Disturbance of natural cycles by combustion pollutants : acid rains, greenhouse effect, hole in stratospheric ozone layer. Regulation : meaning and application. Methodology and techniques to reduce combustion pollution : combustible purification before combustion, decrease of pollutant emission by burner optimisation, smoke purification during and after combustion. Application to carbon, nitrogen and sulfur oxides and to flying ashes.
Course objective : Discussion of all possible options to convert chemical en energy into thermal energy minimizing pollutants emission.
