Course contents : Course of applied chemical kinetics and heterogeneous catalysis.
1. Texture of catalysts : Parameters describing the catalyst texture. Analysis of physical adsorption-desorption isotherms. Use of the mercury penetration technique.
2. Transport processes with reaction catalyszed by solids : External mass and heat transfer coefficients. Pore diffusion, Diffusion and reaction inside catalyst particles. The concept of effectiveness factor. Generalized modulus. Diffusion falisification of rate coefficients and activation energy. Combination of external and internal diffusion resistances. Criteria for importance of diffusional limitations. On diagnostic experimental criteria for the absence of mass and heat transfer limitations. Complex reactions in the presence of diffusional limitations. Non isothermal particles. Thermal gradiants inside catalyst particles. External and internal temperature gradients.
3. Heterogeneous catalysis : The fundamentals of adsorption. Characterization catalysts and their surfaces (SIMS, XPS, AES, chimisorption...). The solid-state and surface chemistry of catalysts. Classification of catalysts. Poisoning, promotion, deactivation and selectivity of catalysts.
Course objective : Notions of applied chemical kinetics and heterogeneous catalysis to calculate heterogeneous catalytic reactors.
Prerequisites : Good knowledge of chemical kinetics (see course CHIM0012-2)
Workshops : Exercises and lab works.
A written report for lab works is requested.
Organization : First semester - Parts 1 and 2
Second semester - Part 3 and lab works
Written notes : Written notes available for the whole course at the first lesson. These notes are accompanied with a booklet of exercises.
Assessment : Written examination in exercises.
