Biology of cells, organisms and populations (evolution, diversity, ecology)

Course contents : Biology is the study of living organisms from the molecular level to the biosphere level. The course will show both the unity and the diversity of the living beings.
It is composed of 7 parts :
- The cell (short introduction to organic chemistry and biochemistry, structure and function of the different organelles and membrane network, gene expression into proteins, bioenergetics, and cell division)
- Reproduction and genetics (sexual and non-sexual reproduction, meiosis, development cycles, genetics, gene expression, and genetically modified organisms)
- Sexual reproduction and embryogenesis in animals
- Sexual reproduction and development in plants
- Histology, organs and systems in animals
- Evolution and biodiversity (taxonomy, phylogeny, evolution, and diversity)
- Ecology
Course objective : - To provide a general knowledge of biology as a prerequisite for more specialised courses in the following years
- To give a general overview of biology from the molecular level to the ecosystem level, and to present the experimental approach in life sciences
Prerequisites : Basic knowledge of biology, chemistry and physics (secondary school level)
Workshops : Practicals and exercises will be organised in 15 half-day sessions (microscopic observations, dissections, various experiments, exercises of biochemistry and genetics, guided tour of zoological museum).
Organization : The theory will be presented by 1.5 to 2 hour sessions (twice a week until Christmas, then once a week). All lectures will be organised on the Sart Tilman campus. Practicles and exercises : half-day sessions downtown (Institute of Zoology, quai van Beneden).
Student will have to enrol to the practical part of this course during a special session at the beginning of the academic year (bring a photograph and 10 Euros). They will also be offered the possibility to buy a dissection kit and glass slides for microcopy (approx. 18 Euros).

Assessment : Written evaluations during the practical sessions, as well as evaluation of reports and drawings produced during these practical sessions (15% of the final mark).
Written exams in January on the theory and practicals of the first semester (20% of the final mark).
In June, exam on the practical part of the course (25% of the final mark), written exam on theory (15% of the final mark), and oral exam on theory (25% of final mark). Oral exam will only be organised if the number of student permits (otherwise, a few more questions will be added to the written exam on theory).
Second session : exam on practical part and written exam on theory (35% and 65% of final mark respectively).
