ASTR0202-1

Internal structure of stars

Duration :30h Th, 10h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
1st "licence" in mathematical sciences6,5
Holder(s) :Arlette Noels‑Grötsch
Course contents : Stellar global properties are presented and the equations governing their internal structure and their evolution are discussed.

A special emphasis is given to the nuclear rections, the equation of state and the opacity.

The different phases of stellar evolution are briefly described.
Course objective : The aim is to know which physical processes are at work inside the stars and to establish links with different domains of physics.
Prerequisites : Basic notions of fluid mechanics, spectroscopy, nuclear physics and statistical physics.
Organization : Three hour sessions are organized during the second semester. The exam is a short presentation of a personal work on a topic discussed during the course and chosen by the student.
Written notes : A syllabus is available.
Assessment : Each student chooses a topic discussed during the course and presents it in about 20 minutes. The other parts of the course are subject to short additional questions.
