Course contents :

Scientific literature search

Theoretical approach: available information resources (books, journals, Internet), tools making information search possible (i.e. bibliographical data bases, search engines) and tools for locating information (i.e. catalogues).
Practical approach: making optimal use of all these tools.

English

The course focuses on the development of reading and data-gathering skills using texts or sets of texts in the field of Veterinary Medicine.

It includes the following:

  • Graded veterinary medicine texts for reading and understanding.
  • An introduction to the terminology of veterinary and animal science.
  • Exam-format exercises as well as reminders of grammatical patterns characteristic of medical English.
Course objective :

Scientific literature search

The aim of this theoretical and practical training is to optimise the search for relevant scientific information making the best of the various resources and tools available at the Faculty Library and on the Web.

English

The course mainly aims at (1) developing the global and selective reading comprehension of scientific documents, and (2) the development of an extensive specialized vocabulary - both active and passive - of Veterinary and Animal Science.

Therefore, it starts from simple reviews for the general public and gradually progresses to genuine articles from reputed veterinary journals.

The skills acquired in the course should allow students to access veterinary literarure easily and efficiently.

.
Prerequisites :

Scientific literature search

None, but being comfortable using a computer and having a basic knowledge of scientific English are certainly assets.

English

Considering its objectives, the course cannot be an introduction to the basics of the English language. As a result, students should already have a good basic grounding in English grammar and vocabulary.

Hopefully, all future veterinary students should know that they need to have become familiar with English during prior general education.
Workshops :

Scientific literature search

Two mandatory sessions, taught to groups of 8 students using the Faculty Library computers. These workshops should start in the week of 3rd October 2005.

English

Considering the significant differences between students, the limited teaching time and the number of students, supervised self-learning and remedial work should be given due attention.

The course includes explicit exam guidance and training and numerous exam-format tests which will give students repetitive exam practice enabling them to train and improve their skills.

Students are encouraged to prepare texts and do exercises seriously every week if they want to pass the terminology and reading comprehension exam..
Organization :

Scientific literature search

Five theoretical hours followed by 5 workshop hours. The course starts in the week of 19th October 2005. Students will have to take part actively in the workshop sessions. Workshop schedules and groups will be posted up on the Library noticeboard in due time. In principle, no student can be excused from the course.

English

The in-class course is taught for 2 hours twice each week (on Wednesday & Friday) in the first half of the year.
Written notes :

Scientific literature search

The course notes are available on the Library website http://www.ulg.ac.be/fmv/bib/bibcours.htm .
The reference books mentioned in the course notes are all available at the Library.

English

The Veterinary English course book is available in the Intercopy copy shop (Sart Tilman).

If necessary, students can also purchase the Grammaire Anglaise de Base (with exercises and key) ISLV. It is written in French and is also available in the Intercopy copy shop.
Assessment :

Scientific literature search

Exam to be held in January 2006 (duration two hours) using the Library computers. It will assess the studentsÂ’ ability to efficiently use information search computing tools.

English

Written exam in January featuring multiple-choice questions on a sight text dealing with one of the aspects of veterinary medicine as well as vocabulary questions.

The English grade is combined with that of the course Introduction to Documentary Research.
