VETE0065-1

Introduction to information technologies and their applications to veterinary medicine

Duration :5h Th, 10h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
1st year of a Bachelor's degree in veterinary medicine2
Holder(s) :Frédéric Farnir
Course contents : This course provides a brief description of micro-computers. Software and hardware products are explained. from the application perspective, the course is internet oriented: e-mail, web surfing, information retrieval, communications over internet. An introduction to HTML is also given as an example of a computer language.
Course objective : The goal of the course is to show how information management and communication are two important tools in the practitioner toolbox. Another goal is to bring student in front of a computer to show how easily apparently awkward manipulations can be accomplished. To reach this goal, lectures are followed by "hands-on" sessions in the faculty computers room.
Prerequisites : None
Workshops : Two hours are used for the explanations needed to start creating a web site on a vet subject. The remaining hours are devoted to the development of the site, with the help of the assistants.
Organization : Five lectures, of one hour each, are given. A session is then organized in the computers room of the faculty. During this computer session, details are provided about Internet, the faculty network, e-mail, search engines, and html editors. In the second part of the session, students have the possibility to choose a veterinarian oriented subject, to search for information on the subject, and to start to build a web site containing the obtained information. More sessions are organized especially for students facing computers problems.
Written notes : Theoretic notions, along with practical details, are gathered in a web site, continuously available to the students on the faculty intranet.
Assessment : The final evaluation takes place at the end of the first quadrimester. The principle is to provide a web site (on a subject previously agreed upon), and to explain the inner workings of the site. The web site will have been at least partially developed during the practical sessions.
