VETE0064-1

Biostatistics as applied to veterinary medicine I

Duration :10h Th, 5h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
1st year of a Bachelor's degree in veterinary medicine2
Holder(s) :Frédéric Farnir
Course contents : Descriptive statistics (data types, data summary, position and variation parameters).

Probability laws (Binomial distribution, Poisson distribution, Normal distribution, Chi square distribution...)

Hypotheses testing

Contingency tables.
Course objective : The general goal of this course is to give an introduction to the main statistical methods used in the veterinary sciences fields. This first part introduces the random variables and probability distributions concepts. Data presentation is also explained. Next, hypotheses testing methodology is detailed, with examples using the chi-square distributions, notably in the context of independence tests (contingency tables).
Prerequisites : None
Workshops : Practical examples are provided online on the Faculty intranet. Questions sets are generated randomly and dynamically, upon users requests and needs. After solving, automatic evaluation and corrected version are provided, along with a score. This score serves as an auto-evaluation, and will not be used in the final grade.
Organization : Five lectures, each of 2 hours are organized. Prior to the lectures, a preliminary session is given to explain the course organisation: the lecture material for each lecture is detailed, and the students have the opportunity to read the material prior to the lecture, and ask questions to the lecturer using e-mail. Short questions are answered individually, while longer questions, or questions frequently asked, are developed during the lecture. After the lecture, online tests are provided to the students to evaluate their new knowledge.
Written notes : Course notes (written by the lecturers) are available. Furthermore, an online version is available on the intranet. The electronic copy has features such as solved exercices and automatic tests.
Assessment : The final evaluation is a computerized set of questions with multiple choices.
