The Special Histology of domestic animals

Duration :45h Th, 50h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
3rd "candidature" in veterinary medicine7
Holder(s) :Nadine Antoine
Course contents : The course of special histology of domestic animals aims at describing the various healthy organs of the animal organism. The organs are integrated in systems ensuring the great functions of the organism.
Course objective : The objective of the theoretic course is to teach the students the morphological and functional features of the different organs. Starting from a pure descriptive approach the student will have to be able to establish a relationship between the examined morphology and the function of the cell, the tissue and mainly the organ being studied.
Prerequisites : General histology notions
Workshops : During the practical course sessions, histological preparations of the different organs are put at the students? disposal so that they can examine the cellular morphology, the way the cells are organized to form tissues, the localization and the interrelations of these different tissues in the organ.
- The session starts with a Power point presentation enabling them to synthesize the structures they had to recognize.
Then the students work on their own on the basis of the practical work syllabus as well as the other didactic aids at their disposal (histology books, CD-ROMs of histological illustrations installed on the computers in the practical work room). If necessary they can ask assistant lecturers or graduate assistants for help to carry out their processes.
Written notes : A syllabus of the theoretic course, a textbook for the practical work and an atlas of histology on paper are available at the "Office des cours". A histology atlas on CD-Rom realized on the basis of the preparations analyzed throughout the year is also available at the same office. This atlas can be easily installed on the students' personal computer or on the computers of the multimedia room.

Assessment : During the school year, an interactive CD-Rom QUIZZ will enable them to get familiar with the questions of the practical work exam of the end of the school year. The only purpose is to allow the students to evaluate their method of working and to know the requirement level they will have to reach. These exercises will never be marked in any way.
The theoretical exam is an oral exam. It will be worth 50% of the final mark.
The practical work exam is an oral exam. The student will have to recognize organs preparations which may or may not have been examined during the school year. It will be worth 50% of the final mark.
The student will have to be able to establish a connection between his/her practical and theoretical knowledge. Being only able to recognize an organ is not satisfactory enough to pass. The student will have to prove that he/she can deal with his/her subject with sense and structure.
The practical work exam is worth 50% of the final mark.
