Course contents : First part (35 h)

Ethology (M. Vandenheede)
  • definitions and the four questions of Tinbergen;
  • history;
  • behavioural mechanisms(innate and acquired) ;
  • evolution of behaviour(domestication effect).

The ethogram of farm animals (B. Nicks)
General characteristics of the behaviour of cattle, pigs, sheep and poultry.

Descriptive Ethology (M. Vandenheede)
Description of main behaviours, illustrated by examples chosen in the ethogram of domestic animals.

Second part (10 h)
Applied Ethology of companion animals: additional informations (M. Vandenheede)
The ethogram of dogs, cats and horses, and the perspective of improved man-animal relationships.
