Epistemology of Sociology

Course contents : The course is subdivided into three parts.
The first one is dedicated to the study of the major methodologies concerning the validation in sciences.
The second part considers the main types of explanation in the work in the social sciences and more particularly in sociology. These types of explanation are illustrated by reference texts given to the students.
The third part of the course inverts the point of view and approaches the question of the sociology of the epistemology. It introduces more widely to the sociology of the knowledge.
Course objective : Present the epistemological theories concerning the validation in the sciences generally and in the social sciences in particular (individualism, falsification, the theories as structures, the anarchistic epistemology).
Present the big types of explanation in sociology: causal, functional, structural, hermeneutic explanations and dialectic.
Prerequisites : Knowledge of the main works and authors in sociology.
Particular link with another course of the programme: evolution of the sociological thought.
Organization : Seminar of presentation and discussion from the syllabus and from the portfolio of reading.
