Duration :10h Th, 12h Pr, 4h QA Sess., 15h APP
Credits/ECTS :
3rd "candidature" in medicine5

Course contents : Based on five clinical cases, the module deals with biochemical, physiological, physiopathological, anatomical, histological, nervous, endocrinal and embryological aspects.
Course objective : Starting from clinical cases, reconstruction of a consistent physiopathological pattern. Identification and presentation of normal functional mechanisms based on dysfunctions.
Active participation within groups will encourage students to find answers in listed reference works.

Anatomy:
- Anatomy of male and female reproductive systems and functional consequences.

Histology:
- General genital architecture and histological structures, vascularization and three-dimensional spatial representation at the microscopic scale.

- Histological changes as related to the function of gonads and target organs.

Embryology:
- Embryological origin of genitals.

Physiology/Biochemistry:
- Steroid synthesis biochemistry.

- Principles of gonadal hypothalamo-hypophyseal regulation.

- Physiological mechanisms for the sex act.
Prerequisites : 1st and 2nd-year courses: Introduction to Anatomy, General Histology, General Embryology, General Physiology and General Biochemistry.
Workshops : Anatomy
Demonstrations with anatomical parts and corpses, then dissections done by groups of students. The dissection hall is located on the ground floor in the Institute of Anatomy, rue de Pitteurs 20 in Liège. Equipment: dissection kit, apron.
Histology
5 microscopy sessions. The hall is located in the Institute of Anatomy – 2nd floor – grande salle de TP (great practical hall). Students also have the opportunity of using the VOLUNTARY REVISION system, which allows them to get commented slides, sections and reference books all year round – including during exam periods.
Organization : Introduction course: anatomy, biochemistry-physiology, histology, embryology
Synthesis course: idem
Revision with quizzes
PSL seminars: 6 problems

- Numerous copies of the main reference book (HISTOLOGIE HUMAINE by Stevens and Lowe, De Boeck – 2002 [id. 1997]) will be available in the CHU library and the Human Histology Department secretariat.
Human Histology lecture notes are available at the AREM (Medicine Students Association).
Assessment : 1st and 2nd exam periods:
- written exam with 1 open question, 4 short open questions, 50 multiple-choice questions with general implicit solutions and certainty indexes
- integrative oral exam (skills test). All students are tested by a jury with 5 lecturers. Each jury has a question database (PSL type). Students draw lots for a question, then have 45 minutes for preparation and are tested for 20 minutes.
- Multidisciplinary practical exam for Anatomy, Histology and Anatomopathology (same week, group alternation).
