Duration :10h Th, 2h QA Sess., 18h APP
Credits/ECTS :
2nd year of a Bachelor's degree in medicine4
2nd "candidature" in medicine4
Holder(s) :Jacques Boniver, Pierre Bonnet, Jean‑Pierre Bourguignon, Vincent Bours, Alain Carlier, Vincenzo D'Orio, Jean‑Olivier Defraigne, Patrick De Mol, Thierry Grisar, Ernst Heinen, Maurice Lamy, Renaud Louis, Jean‑Pierre Schaaps, André Scheen, Jean Schoenen, Vincent Seutin
Course contents : The architecture of this module, which focuses on the respiratory anatomic system, aims to present, through the study of 6 complementary clinical scenarios (PBL), the embryonic development, the anatomic structure and the histological nature of the lungs (including their envelopes, and of the anatomical airways. The physiology and biochemical aspects of breathing are studied simultaneously at the macroscopic and cellular levels, while considering the structure-function relations. Additionally, the main physiopathological principles of the respiratory system are examined. In everyday practice, the physician needs to be able to examine correctly the lungs and identify their components, projections and know how to interpret radiographic tests.
Course objective : 1) Knowledge of the anatomo-functional organization of breathing, from the respiratory centers to the respiratory muscles.
2) Knowledge of the anatomy of the nasal cavities and of the pharynx.
3) Knowledge of the anatomy of the larynx.
4) Knowledge of the anatomy of the trachea and its development.
5) Knowledge of the topographic anatomy of the airways.
6) Knowledge of the anatomy of the bronchial tree.
7) Knowledge of the anatomy of the lungs and their embryonary development.
8) Knowledge of the anatomy of the thoracic cage.
9) Knowledge of the topographic anatomy of the lungs in the thoracic cage (projection areas), lung hila and their relation with the elements of the mediastinum.
10) Knowledge of the anatomy of lung envelopes.
11) Knowledge of the histology of the airways and of the lung alveoli.
12) Understanding the physiology of gas exchanges.
13) Knowledge of the lung volumes and their mobilization.
14) Knowledge of the factors influencing the respiratory work.
15) Knowledge of the functional characteristics of the lung blood flow.

- The main reference book: HISTOLOGIE HUMAINE by Stevens et Lowe, Ed. De Boecke - 2002 (id 1997). It is available at the CHU library and at the Service d'Histologie humaine.
The Human histology course is available at the AREM.
Assessment : 1st and 2nd session:
- Written exam with 1 open question. 5, open short-answer questions, 50 multiple choice questions with general implicit solutions and certainty levels.
- Oral integrative exam (control of competencies). All students undergo an examination by a panel of 5 lecturers. Each panel uses a bank of questions (PBL type). The student selects randomly a question, prepares the answer for 45 minutes and is interrogated for 20 minutes.
