Duration :10h Th, 2h QA Sess., 15h APP
Credits/ECTS :
2nd year of a Bachelor's degree in medicine4
2nd "candidature" in medicine4

Course contents : Through 5 clinical scenarios, the module presents the mains aspects of the following areas of the nephro-urological system: embryonary development, anatomy (systematic and topographic) histology, physiology and biochemistry.
These elements are studied while talking into consideration the structure-function relationship.
Course objective : Anatomy:

Histology:
- Knowledge of the general architecture of the kidney, its vascularization and the acquisition of a three-dimensional spatial representation at the microscopic level

- Knowledge of components and histological structures of the nephron and establishment of the structure-function relationship

Embryology:
- Knowledge of the embryological origin of the kidneys, of the bladder and of the ureters

Physiology / Biochemistry
- Knowledge of the characteristics of the renal blood flow and its regulation

- Knowledge of the three main urine formation processes

- Knowledge of the active primary and secondary transport mechanisms in the kidney
- Knowledge of the physical characteristics, as well as the normal and abnormal chemical components of urine.

- Knowledge of the physiology of the ureter, of the bladder, and of the urethra and the concerned reflexes

- Knowledge and description of the various fluidic compartments of the organism and their composition as well as the various buffer systems of the organism

- Description of the regulation mode of the main ionic concentrations in the biological fluids

- Knowledge of the regulatory mechanisms which are responsible for the homeostasis of the PH

- Knowledge of the endocrine functions of the renal system
Prerequisites : Semester 2 and 3: Introduction to anatomy, general histology, general embryology, general physiology and biochemistry.

Histology
- see the list distributed during semester 3
- The main reference book: HISTOLOGIE HUMAINE by Stevens et Lowe, Ed. De Boecke - 2002 (id 1997). It is available at the CHU library and at the Service d'Histologie humaine.
The Human histology course is available at the AREM.
Assessment : 1st and 2nd session:
- Written exam with 1 open question. 5, open short-answer questions, 50 multiple choice questions with general implicit solutions and certainty levels.
- Oral integrative exam (control of competencies). All students undergo an examination by a panel of 5 lecturers. Each panel uses a bank of questions (PBL type). The student selects randomly a question, prepares the answer for 45 minutes and is interrogated for 20 minutes.

Anatomy: Students with good grades in anatomy may apply to become tutors by sending their application to M. A. Botte at the Institut d'Anatomie.
Physiology and biochemistry: Depending on the availability of the mandates, tutors are hired on a regular basis. The requirements are a high grade at the exam and overall good grades.
Histology: Tutors are hired every year for two years to provide support during practical exercises. They are chosen for their grade in histology, their overall results at the end of the 3rd candidature, and their motivation. Research projects may be considered provided the student has enough time and motivation. Please contact M. HEINEN or M. JOLOIS or Melle DEFAWEUX.
