Physical and mathematical bases for the sciences of motricity

Course contents : The course begins with a mathematical introduction to experimental sciences.
The experimental physics course consists of four units:
- Part 1: kinematics, biomechanics, solids and strength of materials
- Part 2: fluids and heat
- Part 3: electrostatics, electric potential, direct current, magnetism, magnetic flux density and alternating current circuits
- Part 4: introduction to modern physics and imagery
Oral teaching is systematically completed with experimental demonstrations.
Course objective : Physics describes the real world. Each topic will be dealt with through concrete observation and experimentation so as to lead students to the theoretical study of specific concepts and notions without ever emphasizing details. We shall focus on fundamental theoretical notions within the studentsÂ’ field of interest while providing them with the necessary prerequisite knowledge considering 2nd-year requirements. Whenever possible, the theoretical notions from the different parts of the course will be illustrated with practical applications related to relevant practical courses.
Prerequisites : The course requires good knowledge of secondary education-level mathematics. Students will have to take a test in the first lesson. Based on their results, students will be allowed to attend remedial mathematics classes, which will be organized to refresh basic knowledge and bridge the gap between secondary education and first-year university courses. Such remedial classes are not compulsory, through strongly recommended for students who fail the test.

Such notes will be sold. Time and location will be specified later. The schedule of practical and repetition sessions will be posted on the Faculty notice boards in the entrance hall of the Physics Practical Building (Institut de Travaux Pratiques de Physique).

Organization : The theoretical course will be taught in cooperation by two lecturers in the first term.

Remedial formative assessment workshops (20 hours) will be organized in the second term for students who failed the exempting test in January. Sessions will begin in February. The schedule will be posted on the boards in the physics building (Bâtiment des candidatures en physique).

Students are recommended to buy the book as it is used for both theoretical classes and practical sessions.
Assessment : Compulsory written test in November. The room will be specified in due course.


January Assessment:
Compulsory tests on the rest of theoretical course, practical exercises and problems. Exemption for 10/20 global grades (november and january).

Exam:
End-of-year exam
Total exemption for the second examination period for 10/20 global grades.
