Theoretical Physics, part II: Group Theory

Course contents : 10 chapters: symmetries in Quantum Mechanics, elements of group theory for physicists, introduction to the representation theory, the permutation group, general theory of Lie groups, the orthogonal group, the Lorentz group, unitary groups and their applications to particle physics, elements of gauge groups, applications to hadron spectroscopy
Course objective : 1. To give an introduction on groups and their representations useful for physicists
2. To present the basic symmetries of Quantum Mechanics and Quantum Field Theory
3. To show how the group theory is applied to physics and discuss research perspectives
Prerequisites : Quantum Mechanics
Workshops : 10-15 hours extra if required
Organization : 15 lectures of 2 hours each, preferably the 1st semester
Written notes : Parts of the book « Group Theory in Subnuclear Physics » by Fl. Stancu, published by Oxford University Press, 1996, 421 pages , with solved exercises
Assessment : 1) Homework for exercises 2) Examination on theory and applications
